March 31, 2007 University of Perpetual Help-Rizal (UPHR) overwhelmed New Era University, 71-52, to wrest the last finals berth yesterday in the National Basketball League (NBL) Colleges Challenge Championship at New Era gym in Quezon City. Kiel Misa and Fritz Bauzon delivered 16 points apiece while Valdimer Joe added eight as the three led the Altas’ second half breakaway enroute to victory in this tournament supported by Wang’s Ball Club, Super Drink Ice Tea Juices, Burlington Socks and YKL Color Films. UPHR thus will square off with San Sebastian College in a sudden death match for the championship early next week at the San Sebastian gym in Quiapo. It was a disappointing setback for New Era considering they lost the chance to get into the finals in their own turf. Christian Domingo and Paul de Guzman topped with 15 points while Jay-R Naguit added 13 but their efforts were not enough to lift New Era from a slim 33-36 deficit at halftime. The winner of the San Sebastian-UPHR titular showdown will also earn the right to compete in the 5th Asian University Basketball Championship, staged in cooperation with the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) and the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), slated April 16-23 in Daet, Camarines Norte. The scores: UPHR (71) – Misa 16, Bauzon 16, Joe 8, Galabin 7, Lee 7, Kong 6, Manuel 4, Thoyib 3, Salanga 2, Inion 2. New Era (52) – Domingo 15, De Guzman 15, Naguit 13, Abalos 6, Tagal 3, Ocampo 0.
